Creating an About Page that Will Bring in More for You on WordPress

The last time you probably looked at your About page is the day you created it right? The story is the same for many more people so don’t worry. Contrary to what many people think, this page is not something that you fill up just for the sake of it. It can be one of the tools that get your audience interested and stay interested in your content.

Why About Page is Important

The About page receives very many visits simply because it offers an opportunity to get to know you a little more. If you produce great content every so often, people will automatically want to place a face and information to the person who wrote the story they enjoyed. That’s just how humans do their thing.

The page that promises to give them this information is the About page. Due to that, this page can be your first selling point to your prospective audience and turn them into faithful subscribers.

How to Create a Converting About Page

  1. Location

Your audience needs to find your About page first before they can go through it and immediately decide to sign up. So the page has to be in existence. If it isn’t already there, go to Pages and then Add new. Add a page name too and it has to speak for itself.

Don’t let your readers start wondering what the page title means. Ensure it appears on the menu as well. To achieve this, go for a great WordPress theme with strategic menu locations.

  1. Let the reader know what is in it for them

Now you need to fill this page up with useful information. Many people will introduce themselves, give a little peek into their lives and then put in whatever else that crosses their mind in terms of an introduction.

This is all fine but do your readers want to know you or you the brand? Chances are they want to know you as a brand. They want to see whether you will be able to help them in any way. Humans want to get as much as they can from people and it doesn’t really make them evil; just a little self-centered. They therefore come to your blog not for you but for them.

You therefore need to focus on what benefits your audience will receive from you. Start this campaign from the very top with a compelling title. Choose something that will get your readers’ attention as soon as they see it and get them to read through all of it. Instead of About me you could choose How I will help you grow your business or I want to help you be a better parent.

What comes afterwards should continue the benefits story. Introduce what you do and how they can benefit from it. Be specific but brief so that they don’t get bored reading. Specific details will ensure that you get the exact audience you are looking for.

  1. Prove it

So you say you are all that. How will people trust you? How will they know that you will truly deliver? If you have proof that you are the real deal, go ahead and let them know. You can display the number of followers from different social platforms using a plugin like Social Count Plus.

On the other hand, OptinMonster will allow you to create sign-up forms that can also display the number of subscribers. You can display the names of organizations that you have worked with and even include backlinks to them.

If you are a beginner and have very few followers and haven’t landed any big associations yet do not show these details because they will discredit you. Not to worry though. You can share testimonials from your readers and clients and quotes from influencers in your industry. Use real quotes and testimonials though because you need to remain credible as you grow.

  1. Talk about you

It is a page about you after all so do some justice to that name. Your readers are human so they will want to connect with and know more about you the person. Give some personal information about yourself (children, married, what you do), your hobbies and show a little vulnerability. Don’t give your entire life story though. Maintain a balance so your readers like you and have a general idea about you. Also put a face to all that information and add a photo of yourself.

  1. Get them to act

The fact that this page is visited very often means that you can use it to your advantage. If you have great content your readers might want to stick around for more. You might want to remind them to act on that.

Many will have these readers get on their email list but you can also get more likes for your Facebook page or followers for your Twitter page, selling a certain product or popularizing links to your best posts.

You need to only choose one for each page though so that you avoid confusing your reader. Pick what is important to you and make that the focus for the About page. You can choose to draw their attention to something else on another page.
