Blog Design: The Boy Genius Report

The Boy Genius came to me and asked me to re-design his WordPress-driven blog, The Boy Genius Report. Although the previous design was pretty good, the header area of the blog was composed of a flash file that extended beyond the width of a 1024×768 resolution browser window, and it looked a little odd. Another request was to convert the site from a static-width site to an elastic-width site that expanded as the browser width expanded. That was a big challenge for me as I’d never done an elastic-width site. In the end, however, the site turned out very clean and much more user-friendly than the previous version.

First, I’d just like to offer kudos on the realignment of T.B.G.R.’s blog. It was already great looking, but you made it beautiful. Bravo!!!
Second, I was wonder if you wouldn’t mind posting a write-up on the process that you took to convert the site from and static width to an elastic width based site. I’m looking to do that very same thing for a couple of projects that I’m working on, but documentation has been lacking.
Would you mind writing on the process as well as the positive and negative aspects of coding a sites CSS for an elastic width? I’d also be interested in reading some of your work arounds for browsers like I.E. or Opera as you coded the new CSS.
Looking forward to reading the post hopefully….
