WordPress: The Premier Publishing Platform for Web 2.0 Solopreneurs
By Michael Pollock in WordPress
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to make the switch, but after playing with WordPress for a few days, I’m head-over-heels in love with it. As it turns out, the latest version of WP (2.0) is about to be released, and I’ve been using the beta version until that happens.
Let me preface this by saying WP is not for everyone. If you’re not a tinkering, learn-as-you-go type of person, you might want to stick with one of the hosted services like Typepad (eeeyuck) or the hosted version of MoveableType (yawwwn). If however, you want a powerful, publishing platform that gives you an enormous amount of functionality, you won’t do better than WordPress.
Perhaps the best feature of WP is the community of tech savvy developers and Web 2.0 entrepreneurs that comes along with it. From The Famous 5-Minute Installation all the way through to modifying and extending WP’s functionality, the documentation is simply amazing. Check out some of these subject areas in the WordPress Codex:
- Getting Started with WordPress
- Working with WordPress
- Design and Layout
- Advanced Topics
- Troubleshooting
- WordPress Plugins and Customization
- And much, much more.
And not only that, if you can’t find an answer to your question in the Codex somewhere, there’s also a very vibrant support forum that’s more than happy to field your question.
I’ll write more later, but in the meantime, if you have a sense of adventure, go take a look at WordPress. Maybe even download it and do a test install to see if it’s something you want begin using. Just have a little patience as you negotiate the learning curve of any new application. I think ultmately, you’ll be happy you did. I certainly am.

I switched to WordPress 4 or 5 months ago (from b2evolution) and I really like it. I have not had a look at wordpress 2.0 yet.

I’ve been using WP for a few months now myself. I agree - awesome!! I’m getting ready to implement WP into a client’s existing web site design - I love that flexibility WP has.

What about the security issues that some say WordPress is supposed to have?

Actually, I use WP blogs on a lot of my sites as well. But what you said is true. If you do not want to play around with the settings and templates, standard blogging platform like blogger and typepad would be a better option.
For a more robust CMS, you might want to consider Joomla as well.
